Our Kitchen Renovation has Begun

When my husband and I bought this house, we loved everything about this house except the kitchen. We always knew we'd renovate it eventually, but after a year of living with this kitchen, we couldn't take it. I'd clean and clean, but the space never felt clean. I enjoy cooking and entertaining, but not in this kitchen. The 60-year old kitchen has bright orange walls, painted wood paneling, bright blue laminate countertops, cabinets thatdon't open and close properly with bulky wrought iron hardware and my favorite...ugly beige ceramic floor tiles with super wide, dark grout lines.

So the day after Christmas, after we hosted a three-course dinner, "the last supper" in our old kitchen, we began demo, and man did it feel great. Here I am trying to pull out this door trim and molding (great shot :))
The next day I had to return to work, but my husband and two of his close friends from the CT Guard, volunteered their time and completed the rest of demo. Amazing!

We are now on DAY 4 of construction. The subfloor has been put in and my husband is at the house talking to our contractor about taking down the wall that separates the kitchen from the laundry area. You can see part of the wall in the picture of above. On the other side of that wall is a door that leads outside to our deck. Mike would like this wall taken out and a sliding door to the deck put in. Great idea, let's more daylight in to the space, opens the kitchen up even more and it does not affect my kitchen design in terms of cabinets or countertops. Just drives up the overall budget costs up a bit, but I think it will look good.

Today is my 31st birthday (Happy Birthday to me) and we're off to the MGM Foxwoods casino for the night, but construction continues on tomorrow. Can't wait to see where we're at when I get back.

  1. Holy cow, this is awesome. I undersand the feeling of never being able to get an old kitchen (or house for that matter) to feel totally clean. I think that the new floor will help immensely!

  2. I liked how ceremonious all of you were for your old kitchen's last hurrah! And it is for the better, since a good environment is needed for you to fully enjoy the whole process of preparing and eating food.
